And the city is making efforts to make that hope a reality. We have seen film festivals, lit fest, music fest, food fest, and comic-cons but Raipur city has come up with an innovative idea, a Kachra Mahotsav or a Garbage fest. The city is celebrating Swachhta by organising a garbage fest from January 19 – January 22. The main goal of Kachra Mahotsav is to guide people on waste management, a concept that is yet to take off in India.SourceSource“People need to understand that there is an urgent need to change the way we manage the waste. It is no longer an option, that we use something and just drop it in the trash bin. People need to know about recycling, upcycling and reusing. And, with this agenda in our mind we have come up with Kachra Mahotsav,” said Rajat Bansal, Municipal Commissioner of Raipur. In the Kachra Mahotsav, there are different types of workshops being held to educate people on how effectively they can start managing their waste. From teaching composting, recycling methods to upcycling different products such as glass, plastic and paper, the workshops cover every aspect of waste management.Source“Apart from selling, the vendors are also educating visitors about the fact how they have made that particular item from waste. There are stalls in which people can learn about handling different types of waste like paper waste, plastic waste, glass waste, to name a few,” added Mr Bansal. “At the end of the day, we want to change people’s mindset on the way they look at trash or waste items. Through this fest, we aim to instill the habit of recycling, reusing and upcycling among people.”SourceKachra Mahotsav has got some exciting music performances. But, with a swachh touch! All the bands performing in this fest will create music using waste items. What’s more, there are different stalls where people are selling home décor, utility items made out of waste. Apart from this, the fest is also holding competitions where people of the city are being asked to showcase their talent with waste. They have been asked to create something using a waste item and showcase in this fest. Top three performers in the fest will get awards and recognition.SourceRaipur through Kachra Mahotsav hopes to improve its performance and be among the 10 cleanest city in India. Last year, Raipur registered an improvement by getting a rank of 129 up from 293 the previous year.
