Unveiling the Truth: A Deep Dive into the Kolkata Doctor Rape Case

The horrific incident that occurred on August 9 shook the entire country. Yes, we are talking about the Kolkata Doctor rape and murder case, national news. Does a doctor, who saves lives, deserve this? It caused anger among people and raised questions about the negligence of the institution’s authority.

R G Kar Medical College can be considered liable for this incident. Apart from this, the safety of female students and doctors in such institutions has become a serious concern. This further led to protests all across the country and public outrage. 

Although the key suspect, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested, there is still much more to be untangled. The case investigation has been transferred to the CBI.

The Terrible Incident: How Is It Going?

Night of August 9

The victim doctor was a second-year postgraduate trainee at R G Kar Medical College of Kolkata. The 31-year-old doctor had dinner with her friends, just as usual. After that, she went to the seminar hall to take some rest as there was no specific space for resting. This was all. Those inhuman people couldn’t see a female doctor resting. 

The Next Morning

The next morning, the doctor’s semi-nude body was found in the seminar hall. With the condition of her body, it was very clear that something very wrong had happened. What makes it even more suspicious is that the family of the doctor had to wait three hours to see her body. 

“Your daughter died by suicide” – this is what her parents were told over a call by the Assistant Superintendent of Chest Medicine Department. However, police later claimed that it was never called a suicide. 

Her father expressed deep concerns and stated that all of this clearly indicates sexual assault. He even accused the institution of not conducting a serious investigation.

The doctor’s father broke down saying, “She was only draped in a bedsheet, with legs….’ He described the horrifying scene stating that the 31-year-old doctor was draped in a bedsheet with legs apart and one hand on her head. 

Hospital Authority in Question

After the brutal rape and murder, several questions were raised about the leadership of Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former head of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. 

Instead of answering the public’s questions, Ghosh was asked to go on leave. Comments questioning his leadership were all over the internet accusing him of not maintaining proper safety for the staff. This made him resign from his post as head of the R G Kar Medical College.

But then, something really surprising happened. Just 24 hours after that, Sandip Ghosh became the Principal of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.

Protests by Healthcare Workers All Across the Country

Looking at the ignorance of the hospital authority and lack of proper investigation, all the junior doctors of the hospital left duty and started protesting to demand justice for the young doctor. This further spread all across India. Student associations and healthcare professionals rallied for immediate action and justice. 

The Main Suspect ‘Sanjay Roy’ Arrested

Police found several pieces of evidence, including a broken Bluetooth earphone, against the key suspect ‘Sanjoy Roy,’ who is a 33-year-old civic volunteer. He had access to different departments of the hospital. Apart from this, his history of marital violence and watching violent pornography increased suspicions against him. An investigation is still being conducted to identify his close ties. 

CCTV Footage Destroyed

A senior advisor at the Union Ministry of Information, Kanchan Gupta, claimed that the CCTV footage of the related area has been purposely destroyed to cover up the crime and save the ones who were involved in the Doctor’s rape and murder. This has resulted in the public’s distrust in an ongoing investigation.

CM Mamta Banerjee’s Response

“If Needed, Accused Will Be Hanged,’ Mamta Banerjee said responding to the public outrage and demand for justice. She stated that those involved in the crime will have to go through serious consequences, including the possibility of being hanged. 

A Mob Breached the R.G. Kar Medical College

On the night of August 14, a peaceful protest ‘Reclaim the Night’ was going on, when suddenly a mob breached the college and destroyed the hospital property where the crime took place. After this, the peaceful protest turned into a violent one.

Updates on The Investigation

To avoid further delay in justice, the case is transferred to the CBI. CBI has got approval from the Kolkata Court to carry out a lie detector test on Sanjay Roy.

Another major finding is that CBI’s investigations so far suggest that it was not a gang rape, contrary to the assumptions. The forensic report points to the involvement of a single person.
